Gym Etiquette & Training Guidelines

To keep training safe, respectful, and enjoyable for everyone, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gyms around the world follow similar standards. Please review and follow these guidelines:

Safety & Training

  • Start slow if you are new. Focus on learning technique before using speed or strength.

  • Tap early and tap often. Tapping is part of learning and is always respected.

  • Listen to your coaches. They are here to keep you safe and progressing.

  • Wrap your fingers or joints if you feel pain or instability.

  • Let your training partners know if you have an injury before class.

  • Consult your physician before starting if you have medical concerns or prior injuries.

Hygiene & Cleanliness

  • Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed.

  • Wear clean gear to every class (gi, rash guard, belt).

  • Practice good personal hygiene.

  • Remove shoes before stepping on the mats.

  • Cover any cuts or open wounds before training.

Respect & Culture

  • Respect your training partners, regardless of size, age, belt, or experience.

  • Egos stay off the mat.

  • Ask questions. Learning is encouraged.

  • Help others when appropriate, especially newer students.

  • Leave the mat better than you found it.
